AI Art with AICAN
NFT Radio is back for a new season of dissecting topics at the forefront of NFT culture and technological development! This Thursday, we are exploring AICAN, a patented autonomous AI artist developed by Dr. Ahmed Elgammal, which uses a complex algorithm to draw from art historical knowledge to create something new! Significantly, AICAN created the first machine-generated works that passed the Turing test.
We’ll dive into how this AI artist has processed over 100,000 images to develop its own aesthetic without human intervention, what it means to be an artist at all, and the implications artificial intelligence has on the NFT market and culture.
We’ll also discuss AICAN’s upcoming drop on SuperRare, where it will auction 3 of its flagship pieces: Faceless Portrait #1, Permutation, and Birth of Venus which was featured in HBO's Silicon Valley, Season 5, Episode 3!

Dr. Ahmed Elgammal’s research on knowledge discovery in art history and AI art generation, received wide international media attention, including reports on the Washington Post, New York Times, NBC News, the Daily Telegraph, Science News, New Scientist, and many others. In 2017, an Artsy editorial acclaimed AICAN as “the biggest artistic achievement of the year”. In 2016, a TV segment about his research, produced for PBS, won an Emmy award. AICAN art has been shown in several technology and art venues in Los Angeles, Frankfurt, San Francisco, and New York City.
